Description:
The Atoyac River Basin Sanitation and Restoration Project aims to implement a comprehensive set of actions designed to improve water quality, recover the ecological functionality of the river system, and restore the environmental balance of the basin in the states of Tlaxcala and Puebla. This is achieved through a basin management approach, nature-based solutions, and specialized attention to priority sections.
In the state of Tlaxcala, the project includes works such as the demarcation of the federal zone; the construction, rehabilitation, and re-engineering of wastewater treatment plants; the development of wetlands; the construction of collectors and outfalls; the reuse of treated water; water quality and quantity monitoring; and riverbank restoration. These efforts incorporate social-use spaces and actions that strengthen ecosystem services and sustainable water resource management.
Similarly, for the state of Puebla, the project includes the construction, rehabilitation, and re-engineering of inter-municipal and local wastewater treatment plants; the implementation of wetlands and household-level sanitation systems; and the construction of wastewater conveyance infrastructure. Additionally, the demarcation of the federal zone is planned. On a cross-cutting level, the project integrates environmental restoration, monitoring, and social engagement actions aimed at reducing public health risks, improving the population’s quality of life, and strengthening community resilience against pollution and climate change.
