Last revision: May 2026
The project comprises a railway infrastructure consisting of a 58 km electrified double-track line, 86% of which runs on elevated viaducts, originating at the Observatorio Terminal in western Mexico City and terminating at the Zinacantepec Terminal in the Toluca Valley. It includes five intermediate stations: Vasco de Quiroga, Santa Fe, Lerma, Metepec, and Toluca Centro; as well as maintenance workshops and depots in Zinacantepec. The rolling stock includes 16 trains in operation, each composed of five cars with a capacity of 719 passengers, enabling the system to transport approximately 230,000 passengers per day. The train reaches a maximum speed of 120 km/h, with a total travel time of 60 minutes. Additionally, the project features a cable-stayed bridge approximately half a kilometer in length near the Vasco de Quiroga station.
The Mexico–Toluca Interurban Train “El Insurgente” began operations in phases: the first phase in September 15, 2023 (Zinacantepec–Lerma), the second phase on August 31, 2024 (Lerma–Santa Fe), and the third phase on February 2, 2026 (Santa Fe–Observatorio).
